BIKING

Tucson Parks are wonderful places to ride, where bikers enjoy adventurous trips through amazing saguaro cactus filled forests and challenging mountain rims. Rides of all levels are available, from mellow sunset paved rides, to rugged volcanic terrain land. Check all equipment before you leave home. Rides in the desert require proper preparation due to the fact that cacti thorns on riding trails frequently puncture tires, and desert sun temperatures can vary greatly from dawn to dusk and season to season. Take repair tools, chain links, a small adjustable wrench, a hex wrench, two tubes, a tire patch kit, and an air pump.

Bicycle Safety

The first rule of safe cycling:
Always wear a helmet. Being away from cars greatly reduces, but can't eliminate, the potential for accident and injury. In the case of a fall, a helmet will drastically reduce the risk of serious injury. Still, be especially careful at bridges, overpasses and other trail transitions.

Rail-trails can be busy thoroughfares on weekends or near trailheads. The most common cause of accidents is riders colliding, so keep your distance and slow down when passing other trail users.

Teach your kids to say, "on your left" when overtaking, or get everyone a bell.
TucsonTrail Index
50 Year Trail is a great ride for a beginner or anyone not waiting to do much climbing. The trail is located at the base of the Catalina Mountains off Oracle Drive, Northeast of Tucson; get a good map at www.mountainbikeaz.com/trails/tucson.shtml

There is a small entrance fee and it is worth it! The beauty of the region and this great mountain range is astounding. As the trail begins, you wind along the base of the Catalina's where cactus is blooming this time of year. It is a sight to see; bring an extra tube or two. The highlight of the trail is a section known as the Chutes! This area is really great with many whoopy-dos and cool drop offs. Double back to return - you ride faster once you are familiar with a trail and you will love this fast ride with action on the way back.
