| Tucson is known as the "Old Pueblo". A colorful history suggests that the area has been inhabited for over 8,000 years. A walled Presidio was created August 20, 1775, near the center of downtown, by Irishman, Hugh O'Connor, and a Colonel in the Spanish Army. The original wall no longer stands, but is commemorated in the historic El Presidio neighborhood. Tucson, a first class desert city with an estimated population of 491,750, was noted as one of the fastest growing cities in the nation at the turn of the century. A unique mixture of Native Indian, Spanish, Mexican and Western Pioneer culture makes up a very fascinating blend. |

| DESERT CREATURES Rattlesnakes can be found in rock piles, tall grass, brush, crevices and other shady places. Accidental encounters with rattlesnakes do occur and can result in bites. April through October is when these snakes are generally active during the day. When hiking you can usually avoid rattlesnakes by wearing closed toe, sturdy shoes, long pants and staying on the trails. Scorpions are generally shy and prefer dark secluded places. Scorpions may be found in your garage and closet storage areas. Be cautious when reaching into boxes that have been undisturbed for a period of time. |
